I’ve been approached by a number of business owners and budding software entrepreneurs about how we handle customer billing for zobuno.com and our form builder service.  While every business is unique, and every situation is different, we found Chargify to provide the best value to our customers and our business.

We had a number of options available when we implemented our billing system, and struggled with the right path to take.  It was important to us that we provide our customers flexibility in their plan options.  We didn’t want to lock anyone into a long term commitment to our service or a specific plan.  We were looking for more than a Google Checkout button on our signup page.

Writing Our Own
We are developers and geeks all around. Our first thought was to develop our own billing system.  While this might save us a few dollars,  we would end up delaying the launch, and would have another system to maintain.  We wanted to focus our attention on supporting our customers and improving our form building service, not creating a custom billing module.

Third Party Services
We looked at a number of the recurring billing services available and mapped out the total cost over time.  Most of their pricing models were so different that it made it difficult to match the dollar for dollar benefit exactly.  In the end the pricing seemed to level out over time.  Next, we looked at the different interfaces, features and integration options of each service.  There were some similarities but one service seemed to stand out above the rest.

We chose Chargify
In the end we chose Chargify because it provided the shortest time to market, and the least amount of ongoing maintenance. We can now focus more time supporting our customers, and less time managing billing.
